Week 14:
The theme for Week 14 is "Language." Have you researched an ancestor who spoke a different language than you or dealt with records in another language? What about an ancestor who was known for their use of language?
Johann Jacob Bruner
25 Feb 1703– 14 Nov 1783
7th great-grandfather
Johann Jacob Bruner was born on February 25, 1703, in Schifferstadt, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
The Brunner family originated in Rothenstein, Switzerland, but before 1679 had migrated
to the Palatine village of Klein Schifferstadt, six miles north of the city of Speyer.
Johann Jacob Brunner was the first to arrive. Baptized at Klein Schifferstadt on Pebruary 25, 1703, he had married in 1725 Maria Barbara Sturm, the daughter of Christian Sturm. One son, Johann Peter Brunner, had been born to this couple in 1726. Early in 1728, perhaps as advance agents for the larger emigration which was to follow in the next year, Jacob Brunner and his small family, together with his wife's brother Jacob Sturm, set forth for America.
From Rotterdam aboard the ship Mortonhouse they sailed to Deal in England and from that place on June 15th left for Philadelphia. Together with Johen Georg Doderer, Mardin Schaub, Johannes Huber,
Johann Jost Schmidt, Johann Peter Mulich and other familiar names, they arrived at Philadelphia on August 23, 1728. Their group of 200
souls constituted the sixth list of arrivals in the long array of over 500 such lists which followed over the next eighty years.
Jacob Brunner's land on "Tasker's Chance" was called "Rich Level." Its 248 acres were deeded to him by Daniel Dulany on July 28, 1746, in the deed corner of Tetur Laney's land is mentioned." This helps to locate Jacob Brunner's land as lying parallel to and just west of today's U. S, Highway 15 as it passes through the
northwestern portion of the city of Frederick.
Schifferstadt, Germany is a "twin" town with Frederick, Maryland.
Earlier, on June 29, 1741, Jacob Brunner had 25 acres surveyed as "Inlett" which was
located on a branch of Carroll Creek next to "Beatty's Line" on "Rocky Creek".
He died on November 14, 1783, in Frederick, Maryland.
List of foreigners imported in the ship Mortonhouse, John Coultas, Master, from Deal. Qualified Aug. 24, 1728:
The Schifferstadt House was built, circa 1758, by Elias Brunner, brother of Johann Jacob Brunner - Johann Jacob Brunner (m. Maria Barbara Sturm). Built around 1758, Schifferstadt Architectural Museum is the one of the oldest and most historic buildings in the City of Frederick, Maryland, and among the best examples of early Colonial German Architecture in the country.
