Reintroducing Jeremiah Miley Spahr, Sr

Reintroducing Jeremiah Miley Spahr, Sr.

For years, I've been searching for a photograph of Jeremiah and haven't been able to find one until today!

Looking through a drawer full of pictures, I found a photograph of Jeremiah amongst pictures of his daughter, Amanda.

Jeremiah Miley Spahr Sr

19 Jul 1840 – 26 Nov 1926

3rd great-grandfather

Jeremiah Miley Spahr was born on July 19, 1840, in Warrington Township.

Jeremiah Miley Spahr joined the military on September 19, 1861, in York, Pennsylvania, when he was 21 years old.

Unfortunately, after the Third Battle of Winchester, Jeremiah's story takes a dark turn.

ARREST ON THE CHARGE OF MURDER.

On Friday last, Jeremiah Spahr, Henry Spahr, Levi Reirer, Lewis Spaht, and Lewis Rester, of Warrington Township, York County, were arrested and brought to this Borough, charghed with killing a certain colored man whose name is unknown, but who came into the neighborbood on Wednesday, the 1st, in company with Stuart's rebel caralry. The facts, as we undertand, appear to be as follows: On the Wednesday, above stated, this negro as seen in company with the rebels, riding horse which had been stolen from a Mr. George Ewig, and in reply to a question from one of the rebels, as he galloped along the road mounted on if. Emig's horse, "Well Jim, did you get that horse, he answered, "Yes, by G--d I did, and he's a good one too." On Friday following, the same negro was seen on the State Road by the same per-lson, who heard the foregoing conversation on Wednesday, and advised him to leave the neighborbood as quickly as possible. Sulking about in the woods for some time after, the negro as seen by several persons, and being strongly suspected to be a rebel horse thief, be was pursued by the above named citizens in company with William R. Smith, who succeeded in overhauling the negro, when Jeremiah Spahr, who belongs to the 87th Regiment of Pennsylvania troops, leveled his rife and shot him. An Inquest was subseqtlently held on the body by Dr. H. M. MeClellan, the coroner, where at the above facts were elicited be prosecution was instituted, howerer, by Jobn E. Wells and David Caldwader, at whose suit the parties were arrested and committed. A writen habeas corpus brought them before Judge Fisher, for the purpose of suvmitting them to bail, when the same facts substantially appeared at the hearing. The parties have been submitted to bail.

It took several weeks for a grand jury to be convened in York under Judge Robert Fisher, but lacking sufficient evidence, the charges were dismissed.

The three Spahrs, Smith, Reiver, and Reeser were free men.

Jeremiah married Elizabeth Ann 'Eliza'
Laughman Spahr on 15 Nov 1866 in York, Pennsylvania at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Roysville Pastorate. Solomon Dasher was the pastor and his wife Mrs. S. A. Dasher served as the witness.

The couple had 13 children in 25 years. Their daughter, Amanda Ellen Spahr (1882–1970) is my 2nd great-grandmother.

Jeremiah died on November 26, 1926, in his hometown at the age of 86.
