52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 20

Week 20:

The theme for Week 20 is “Wheels.”

Not going to lie... I feel very uninspired by this week's prompt.

Amy Johnson Crow, the creator of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks wrote "I have to admit that this prompt is dear to my heart, since my Dad owned and operated a service station for 50+ years. Anyone like that in your family? How about someone who took an epic road trip (or train trip – they have wheels, too!)".

I don't have any race car drivers on the family tree. No train robbers, no adventures. Nothing that immediately jumps out at me for this prompt.

Elwood David "Bud" Erney

Born: 11 Oct 1915 Camp Hill, Crawford, Pennsylvania, USA

Died: 28 Feb 2005 Lemoyne, Cumberland, Pennsylvania, USA

My great-grandfather, Bud, worked on the railroad. He spent 40 years working for the Pennsylvania Railroad and Con Rail.

He called all of us great-grandchildren Johnny and you couldn't leave his house without taking some baseball cards with you. Pap loved watching TV at full volume with his hearing aids turned down. He loved sitting on his front porch and was able to hand feed some of the squirrels that would venture up to the porch in search of food.

He got a few... maybe more than I know... speeding tickets in his later years.

I still don't know how or why he got the nickname Bud, but I never heard anyone call him Elwood. It was always Bud or Pappy Erney.
